Sketching has been around for ages and is looked at as an early form of a study and isn’t as detailed as a painting. Sketching is a rough form of drawing and is never done to the exact dimensions. The very popular doodling is also considered as a form of sketching. In this article we look at the different form of sketching that is widely recognized.

  1. Croquis

Croquis is set to represent a template that is drawn to identify the artist about a person or an event at a later stage. The sketch isn’t completely accurate is drawn to represent the lack of time that the artist has. Croquis is a form that has been around for ages but has recently become popular with fashion designer, who sketch a live model to keep their pose, attire or presence in mind.

  1. Pochade

The form of sketching where an artist takes their canvas to the great outdoors and quickly perform a color sketch of the skies above; they then take their color sketches back inside to elaborate on. These days many anime artists tend to rely on pochade because of how easy it is. It is essentially used to capture the scenic beauty, with overindulgence on the sky. Fans of the popular anime genre would tell you about how detailed every inch of the anime is; thus these pochades come in handy for artists, who are trying to recreate real-life in their work. Pochade is an upgraded version of croquis; croquis doesn’t involve the use of colors and also are used for sketching a number of different scenes, objects, and emotions. Vincent Van Gogh is a famous artist who used to use the pochade; he was known to take his canvas or the surface he was painting on, outside and then finish up his work indoors. Van Gogh would actually sketch on the surface of the canvas and believed that the pochade was a great skill to possess.

  1. Portrait Sketch

Portrait sketches are known to be the hardest form of sketching; because they were able to stand alone as works of art themselves, without having to work further on them. These days they are used to find the perfect angle at which to draw someone; typically a person is drawn from multiple angles and then the perfect angle is chosen. A wide array of paints and canvases can be used in a portrait sketch and many believe that portrait sketches are only diminished by the imagination of the sketcher. The portrait sketch is also used to capture subtle emotional expressions on canvas.
